Two Books – Thrillers
I’m back in the reviewing game after a long hiatus and I’m starting off with a couple of thrillers. First up is The Unheard by Nicci French. Tess and Jason have separated and share custody of Poppy. When Tess finds a disturbing drawing by Poppy, she takes her to a psychologist who suggests that Poppy may have experienced some trauma. Tess then decides to take matters into her own hands and go to the police, but they don’t have enough evidence to investigate.
I was disappointed with this book. The police gave Tess way too much of their time and effort and Tess seemed a bit neurotic. I was hoping for a better pay-off, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Next up is Everything We Didn’t Say by Nicole Baart. Juniper returns to her small town to repair her relationship with her daughter and to get to the bottom of the murders of Cal and Beth Murphy, for which her brother is a suspect. Juniper’s former best friend won’t forgive her for coming between her and her boyfriend, and the more Juniper investigates, the more her safety is in jeopardy.
Unfortunately, I found Juniper very frustrating. She didn’t seem to understand why her daughter would be distant, and the reason she was returning to town in the first place was to help an ill friend who was absent from the story. The pace was also quite slow, which made it hard for me to enjoy this mystery/thriller.
If you’ve read either of these books, let me know what you thought!
